How to Do Keyword Research

Start with the market, not a keyword tool.

1. Map the topic ecosystem

List the problems, questions, products, audiences, use cases, comparisons and outcomes around the subject. This prevents a single seed keyword from defining the entire strategy.

2. Expand with data

Use keyword tools, competitors, autocomplete, Search Console and customer language to expand the universe. Tools such as KWFinder can combine related terms, competitor research, local data and keyword-gap discovery.

3. Qualify opportunities

Use demand, difficulty, relevance and monetization or business value as filters. Avoid treating any one metric as a decision.

4. Verify the SERP

Inspect the current results. If the ranking pages satisfy a different intent than your proposed page, the keyword list is misleading you.

5. Cluster into pages

Merge close variants when the same page can satisfy them. Split only when the user wants a meaningfully different outcome or the SERPs diverge.
