How to analyze a Google SERP before creating content

A five-minute result-page check can prevent hours spent creating the wrong page for a keyword.

1. Set the right location and device

Search results can differ by geography and device. Use the context that matches the audience you care about.

2. Identify the dominant outcome

Are the top results guides, product pages, comparison pages, videos, local listings or something else? That pattern is stronger evidence of intent than the keyword wording alone.

3. Inspect the ranking pages

Look at topical relevance, page quality, brand strength and link context. Avoid reducing competition to one authority score.

4. Note SERP features

Featured snippets, local packs, videos, ads and other modules can change how much organic click opportunity remains.

5. Decide whether to target

Target the query when you can create the type of destination users and Google are rewarding—and when the topic belongs in your site's scope.
